This study aimed to examine the incidence and risk factors of epilepsy in survivors of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in a tertiary hospital, and to examine the incidence of HIE in neonatal and maternal characteristics in Taiwan. All neonates with HIE treated in the neonatal intensive care unit from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2008 were reviewed. Their medical charts were reviewed to collect neonatal and maternal variables, clinical characteristics, and short-term outcomes. Seventy-two infants with HIE were included in this study. Seven of them had an early seizure; this was found in 5 of 23 infants who had a moderate to severe neonatal encephalopathy on admission. The incidence of epilepsy in HIE was 9.7%. All infants with epilepsy were treated with antiepileptic drugs and only 1 infant had seizures as an isolated problem. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that a severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (odds ratio [OR], 3.58; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04 to 12.26; P = 0.04) and seizures
